If you are the suspect of a crime, you have the right to a public defender, also known as a defense attorney, appointed by the court. A defense attorney will be with you from start to finish, working to protect your interests and rights, and is subject to client confidentiality.

The defense attorney’s job is to ensure that you are treated fairly throughout the criminal proceedings, from the first police interview, during the investigation and at any court hearing. The defense attorney starts working for you as soon as a preliminary investigation is launched.

The assignment lasts until there is a final judgment. It is usually advantageous for the suspect to have a defense attorney even before the first hearing is held.

If you have been the victim of a crime, you often have the right to have your own legal counsel, known as a counsel for an injured party, appointed by the court to assist you during the court process. You can request the appointment of a counsel when you report a crime, and you can also indicate which attorney you want to be appointed as your counsel.

The need for a counsel depends in many cases on the type of crime. Victims of violent crime or sexual offenses are in most cases entitled to a counsel. The costs of the counsel are paid by the state.

The role of a counsel is to help you if you have been the victim of a crime and to defend your rights during the preliminary investigation until there is a final judgment. Among the tasks of the counsel is to help you prepare your claim for damages and inform you about the progress of the case.
